As someone who’s read a lot of “how to” dating books–and who’s had a lot of first dates–I can identify with Katherine Heigl in THE UGLY TRUTH. She’s a successful woman who doesn’t want to believe men are attracted to physical beauty, rather than the beauty inside. She also has a list of prerequisites for a life partner, and isn’t meeting men who fit the bill.Along comes chauvinistic (misogynistic?) Gerard Butler, who tells her that if she follows the rules he sets down, she’ll attract the doctor next door, whom she thinks is the man of her dreams. Butler suggests that she never criticize, dress sexy, and laugh at all her date’s jokes–whether they’re funny or not.
Katherine follows Butler’s advice and gets her man–and then realizes the doctor doesn’t love her, he loves the woman she’s pretending to be. Meanwhile, Butler, a man jaded by too many women who’ve lied to him and cheated on him, has fallen in love with the controlling–albeit sexy–professional woman she is.
There are moments of lovely interaction between Heigl, whom the camera loves, and Butler (especially the dance scene), but ultimately, there’s no reason given for Butler to let down his guard with Heigl and fall in love with her–or for Heigl to fall in love with someone as chauvinistic as Butler. I’m left yearning for that perfect movie romance.

Saw The Ugly Truth. Haven’t laughed SO hard in years. It was roll in the floor funny. Gerard Butler looked the part of a middle aged slob. But he was good. Kathrine Heigl was reserved, everything-always-so-perfect, multi-tasker.
Worth seeing a second time.
